Twilight Zone
At the entrance to a cave, daylight from outside blends with the absolute darkness within. In this twilight zone, flora adapted to low light levels – such as ferns, mosses, and algae – thrive. When cavers venture underground on an expedition, they experience a transition from the familiar world above ground with its weather, diurnal rhythm, vibrant colours, rich odours, layered sounds, and the stress and sorrow of everyday life, into a completely different world governed by rock and water. Our mode of movement and sensory perception change markedly when entering this underground realm.
